Case Study: Soundproofing a Music Studio Inside a Residential Apartment

Published: · Last updated:

Silence case study: a 4×5 m apartment room became a soundproof music studio, with a room within a room on isolation mounts, rockwool layers and a heavy door.

One of the biggest challenges for artists and producers is following their passion for music inside a residential building without constant complaints from the neighbors about vibration and loud sound. In this case study we share how the Silence team turned a room inside a residential apartment into a 100% soundproofed music studio.

In short: a 4×5 m room in a residential apartment was causing neighbor complaints because of playing and recording at night. Silence built a “room within a room” on rubber isolation mounts, with rockwool, mass-loaded insulation and gypsum layers, and a heavy soundproof door. The result: sound transmission to the neighboring apartments dropped to zero.

What was the main challenge?

What engineering solutions were applied?

  1. Double structural isolation: a completely separate inner structure (room within a room) was built on rubber isolation mounts, cutting the direct contact between the studio floor and the building’s concrete slab.
  2. Multiple insulation layers: high-density rockwool combined with mass-loaded insulation boards and specialist gypsum boards (drywall) to reach the highest sound insulation rating (STC rating).
  3. Sealed doors and windows: the ordinary door was replaced with a heavy soundproof door with tight rubber seals, stopping air and sound leaking through the gaps.

What was the final result?

Sound transmission to the neighboring apartments dropped to zero, and the client gained complete freedom to record and play at any time without worry.

Frequently asked questions about soundproofing a studio in an apartment

Can you build a soundproof music studio inside a residential apartment?

Yes. In this project a 4×5 m room in a residential apartment became a soundproofed studio using a room-within-a-room system and multiple insulation layers.

How was bass vibration stopped from travelling through the floor?

By building a separate inner structure on rubber isolation mounts that cut the direct contact between the studio floor and the building’s concrete.

Does an ordinary door affect studio soundproofing?

Yes. It was replaced with a heavy soundproof door with tight rubber seals to stop air and sound leaking through the gaps.
